Though no one can deny its tumultuous past, Bosnians are putting that behind them as Sarajevo leaps forward into a new era while still proudly displaying a rich past. With a backdrop of rolling hills and beautiful mountains, Sarajevo’s old town is a place to get lost in and to savor the unique flavor of east and west. With churches, mosques and synagogues within walking distance of each other, Sarajevo displays a rich blend of culture and a friendly, welcoming people.
Mostar
Mostar was named after his world-known bridge across the river Neretva, which was built already in the 16th Cent. Under the Austria-Hungary hegemony Mostar was important trading centre. In 1992, after proclaiming Bosnia's independence of Yugoslavia, the civil war started. During this period were many of the architectural sites destroyed, including Mostar bridge, which was reconstructed and opened once again in 2004. Since 2005 is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
